Last night was one of the most incredible moments of my life : the half moon was shining, the sky was filled with stars and the lagoon radiated a fluorescent blue water. I wondered how could a lagoon look fluorescent blue and shine, in a pitch black atmosphere. Puerto Escondido.
Have you heard of bioluminescence ? I hadn’t until a couple of days ago while I was visiting Oaxaca . Finding myself researching all that Mexico has to offer, I heard about bioluminescence and how that day was the perfect moment for me to witness this magical moment.
Bioluminescence occurs only in a few places around the world and one of them is la Laguna de Manialtepec, which is located about 15 minutes from Puerto Escondido. This factor occurs because the lagoon is filled with millions of micro organisms whose defense mechanism emits light as a form of camouflage when detecting a predator.
When I set out to swim in the lake after eleven o’clock at night, as soon as I touched the water, my body looked fluorescent blue. While moving my body in the water you could see each of these micro organisms shine individually on me and around me. When lifting my hands full of water, I could see how this was completely unexpected and sensational.
If you have the opportunity to live a moment like this, I have to say its definitely a must. It’s inexplicable, so as much as I try to explain how amazing this was, writing does not do this justice. It’s one of those events in life that is impossible to explain, unless witnessed.
